General Info – Cashew Nut
The source of the much-loved Cashew Nut, cashew trees produce both an edible fruit and the more familiar nut. Native to tropical regions, cashew trees are intolerant of cool temperatures below 5 degrees, making them marginal even in warm subtropical climates. Cashews serve as an excellent alternative for tropical gardens, incapable of cultivating other common nuts such as Walnuts, Pecans, or Almonds. These trees are fast-growing and hardy once established, particularly resistant to drought and salty conditions, although a lack of water can diminish the crop. Cashew trees require good drainage and protection from strong winds, with a preference for acidic soils and are suitable for sandy or sandy loam soils. Cashew trees are exceptionally ornamental, particularly during blossoming, when they are adorned with attractive, rose-coloured, and fragrant flowers. While these trees have the potential to reach heights of up to 15 metres, they commonly stay between 5 to 10 metres, making them an excellent choice for a wildlife-friendly tree suitable for screening. The foliage is arranged spirally, characterized by leathery and elliptical leaves, featuring a distinctive tropical and ornamental appearance accentuated by the coppery-red hue of new growth. Cashew apples, the accessory fruit to the nut, boast a very sweet flavor reminiscent of Mango, Capsicum, and Strawberry, although the skin can be astringent. The fruits are utilized in juices, chutneys, added to curries, and in Goa, brewed into a spirit called Feni. Extracting the cashew nut requires careful handling, as the shell is caustic, necessitating protective clothing. Nuts should be roasted to remove toxins present when raw, with the end product being the widely loved, rich nutty flavour. Cashew trees are a superb option for tropical growers seeking to cultivate their own nuts.
