A member of the Solanum genus and a relative of the Tamarillo, the Casana shares striking similarities in terms of appearance, growth, and taste, while having its own unique value. While also indigenous to the subtropical highlands of the Andes, the Casana exhibits less cold tolerance compared to the Tamarillo and is less suitable to temperate climates. Nevertheless, it has the capacity to recover from minor damage or dieback similar to Tamarillo. The taste of the Casana fruits closely resembles that of the Tamarillo, though some may find it slightly sweeter. Described as having a fruity Tomato flavour, it is often noted as a blend of Peach and Tomato. Much like the Tamarillo, the Casana is a rapidly growing plant, reaching a height of 2 metres, with seedlings bearing fruit quickly in two years. Casana trees feature shallow root systems, making them susceptible to drought and wind damage. It is advisable to mulch well to preserve moisture and plant them in a sheltered position or provide support. The Casana is a delectable choice for Tamarillo enthusiasts or Solanum collectors alike.
