General Info – Burdekin Plum, Sweet Plum, Tulip Plum
A bush food native to tropical and subtropical Australia, the Burdekin Plum is a large rainforest canopy tree which produces, small Plum-like fruits. Growing up to 20m tall, the Burdekin Plum is native to seasonal dry rainforests across Northern Australia and South East Asia. Plants have a has a high drought tolerance and are suitable for seasonally dry, monsoon or savannah climates. Trees prefer full sun, a well-drained soil and will produce better when cross pollinated, although plants are partially self-pollinating. Fruits need to be fully ripe to be palatable and will benefit greatly from extra ripening or bletting to increase sweetness as they can otherwise be inedibly astringent or tart. Fruits can be used in preserves and jams where they provide a Plum-like flavour and colour. Burdekin Plum is a member of the Anacardiaceae family, together with Mango and Cashew Nut. An interesting bush food, ideal for native gardens needing a canopy tree.
