General Info – Breadfruit, Rimas, Kolo, Panapen, Buah Sukun

Native to the Pacific and Southeast Asia, where it forms a staple food in many cuisines, the Breadfruit is a grand tree reaching heights of up to 30 metres, adorned with unique and captivating foliage. Breadfruit trees produce harvests of large, soccer ball sized fruits which are a year-round staple due to their consistent harvests and versatility in preparation. Breadfruits lend themselves to various cooking methods such as baking, boiling, roasting, and frying, serving as an excellent substitute for starchy root crops like Potatoes or Cassava. Even the seeds can be enjoyed after roasting or baking.
Breadfruit can be fried into crispy and delicious chips or incorporated into curries. When ripe, Breadfruit offers a slightly sweet taste reminiscent of artichokes, while the edible seeds, once cooked, are likened to the flavour of Chestnuts. Belonging to the Artocarpus genus, alongside Jackfruit, Kwai Muk, and Lakoocha, Breadfruit is more cold-sensitive than its relatives. It thrives in truly tropical areas with high rainfall and consistently warm temperatures. Ideal conditions include well-draining, fertile soil, and young trees benefit from partial shade or filtered sunlight before maturing in full sun.
Breadfruit trees can achieve heights of 30-40 metres in rare circumstances, although they typically reach half that height in cultivation. Breadfruits mature into impressive trees with a spreading crown. The deeply lobed, showy foliage, measuring up to 90cm in length and 50cm in width, boasts a distinctive tropical appearance with a leathery texture. Male and female flowers are borne separately, with fruits only borne from female flowers, which can bloom year-round in the Pacific.
With their dominant size and multipurpose fruits, Breadfruit trees are well-suited for food forests or agroforestry providing nutritious nuts and flesh, make an excellent choice for those in tropical climates seeking a staple crop grown on an ornamental tree.
