A complex cross of the European Blackberry (Rubus Fruticosus), European Red Raspberry (Rubus Ideaeus), American Dewberry (Rubus Aboriginum), and the fellow hybrid Loganberry, the Boysenberry is a delightful fruit that harmoniously blends the deliciously sweet and tart flavours of its parentage. This results in a divine berry with a versatile range of culinary applications, from fresh consumption to pies and the beloved Boysenberry Ice Cream. Similar to Blackberries and Raspberries, Boysenberries thrive best in temperate climates. However, their relatively low chill requirements make them well-suited for marginal subtropical conditions. Like most Rubus varieties, Boysenberries prefer well-drained, slightly acidic, and fertile soils, along with moderate rainfall and a full sun position. Fruiting on Floricanes (which are the second-year growth), Boysenberries yield abundant crops of delicious, sweet berries in late spring and summer. To optimise productivity, it is recommended to remove any spent canes of Floricanes once they have borne fruit. This not only allows space for new Primocane growth but also enhances airflow. Equally abundant and vigorous, Boysenberries can require attentive management owing to their vigorous growth, with cane’s preferring a support structure such as a trellis and runners requiring removal where undesired. Boysenberries are an unrivalled summer delight, generously borne for gardeners, and with their splendid flavour, cultivating a Boysenberry patch is undoubtedly worthwhile, requiring minimal space for plentiful enjoyment.
