General Info – Blackberry Jam Fruit, Raspberry Bush, Jasmin de Rosa
With its deliciously evocative name, the Blackberry Jam Fruit serves as both a conversation starter for gardeners and a delectable treat that lives up to its flavourful title. Encased within these Grape-sized, yellow skin is a dark, sumptuous flesh boasting a jam-like consistency, justifying its descriptive name. The taste itself is wonderfully sweet and unique, reminiscent of Blackberry Jam, with hints of Prunes and a subtle floral undertone akin to Rose Petals. Best enjoyed straight off the tree, these fruits make for a delectable snack. Growing requirements closely parallel those of the unrelated Blueberry. Plants thrive in acidic soil with excellent drainage but frequent watering and protection from intense sunlight, preferably in partial shade or filtered sunlight—especially in tropical climates. Originating from Tropical Central and South America, the Blackberry Jam Fruit is well-suited to tropical regions, although showcasing a surprising level of cold tolerance, reportedly enduring brief temperatures as low as -3 degrees in optimal conditions. Similar to the Blueberry, its modest size (2m) and slow growth rate make it ideal for container cultivation. Container growing not only addresses the challenging soil requirements but also allows for easy repositioning between shaded and sunny spots. Seedling plants will fruit from a young age and compact size, with flowering occurring as early as 2 years of age in specimens below a meter tall. This makes the Blackberry Jam Fruit an excellent choice for growers with limited space and time. Belonging to the expansive Rubiaceae family alongside Coffee and Gardenia, it shares many similarities with the latter, featuring a compact form, glossy green foliage reminiscent of Gardenia, and fragrant, star-shaped, white flowers. In addition to its distinctive fruits, the Blackberry Jam Fruit presents a visually pleasing, compact ornamental appearance—perfectly suited for container cultivation and confined spaces.
