General Info – Bignay, Bugnay, Chinese Laurel, Wild Cherry, Currant Tree

Indigenous to the tropics of Northern Australia and South East Asia, the Bignay is known for producing a colourful array of tart, edible berries, making it an ideal addition to any native food forest. The fruits are borne in Grape-like clusters, transitioning through a visual spectrum from yellow to red to black as they ripen over the season, creating a stunning contrast. These juicy berries, often likened to Cranberries in taste, offer a delightful combination of slight sweetness and tartness, making them enjoyable whether consumed fresh or processed.
The versatility of Bignay extends to various culinary uses, with the berries suitable for crafting wines, jams, and jellies. Additionally, the tart leaves find a place in salads and stews. As a Native Australian Bush Food, the Bignay is endemic to Northern Australia but is also indigenous to South East Asia. Flourishing in a broad range of tropical and subtropical climates, it even exhibits tolerance to light frosts, allowing cultivation in warm temperate regions. Despite its undemanding nature, with minimal fertility requirements and drought tolerance, the Bignay benefits from some protection against strong, drying winds while thriving in either part shade or full sun.
A medium-sized tree reaching up to 10m in height, the Bignay naturally assumes an erect form with a straight trunk, offering valuable shade through its canopy. As a productive, native ornamental with attractive and tasty berries, the Bignay proves to be a perfect fit for any spacious backyard.
