General Info – Bacupari, Pacura, Guapomo

A rare Amazonian Garcinia and a relative of the Achacha, the Bacupari is a relatively undiscovered species with an exquisite flavour. Bacupari shares close ties with the Achacha, displaying similarities in terms of growing requirements, taste, and appearance. The distinction between Achacha and Bacupari is not well established, leading to potential confusion, but both fruits offer superb taste and are excellent choices.
The small fruits feature a tough yet easily removable yellow-orange skin. Once peeled, an aromatic, translucent flesh is revealed (in contrast, the Achacha has a more opaque, white flesh). Despite the disappointingly thin layer of luscious pulp around the seeds, the flavour is vibrant, sub-acidic, reminiscent of Purple Mangosteen, Mango, and Lemon, but most closely akin to an Achacha. Whether enjoyed fresh or chilled, these fruits make for a delightful snack and can be processed into exceptional jam or juice.
Native to the Amazonian Basin and cultivated in home gardens throughout Tropical South America, the Bacupari thrives in tropical conditions for optimal growth, struggling to fruit in cooler climates. Bacupari are not frost-tolerant and prefer freely-draining, fertile soils, thriving in either full sun or filtered sunlight. Ample watering, especially during fruiting and flowering, is crucial for ensuring large crops. A slow-growing plant, even in its native habitat, the Bacupari may take up to 7-10 years to bear fruit from seed, requiring patience from gardeners.
With its attractive pyramidal shape, dense rounded crown, and glossy leaves, the Bacupari is a neat and handsome specimen, reaching a height of around 10m but commonly growing only to about 5m, making it suitable for smaller gardens. A true delight for both Garcinia enthusiasts and tropical gardeners, the Bacupari stands out as a delicious tropical fruit.
