General Info – Araca, Araza, Araca-boi
An exotic and unique fruit, the Araca boasts a vibrant colour and lively sourness. This rare Eugenia is indigenous to the Western Amazonian basin. Although related to the Grumichama, Brazilian Cherry, and Cherry of the Rio Grande, the Araca sets itself apart with its notably larger size and distinct acidity. The fruits, about the size of a Lime, ripen into a bright yellow hue resembling a Lemon. Beneath the thin, yellow skin lies a juicy, succulent, and aromatic flesh with a texture akin to Casimiroa. Rich in Vitamin C, these refreshing fruits, despite their sourness, are seldom consumed fresh. Instead, they are transformed into juices and smoothies, where the unique, Pitangatuba-like flavor imparts a delicious piquancy. Indigenous to the lowland tropics of Western Amazonia, the Araca thrives in regions with high rainfall, freely draining soils, and consistently high humidity and tropical temperatures year-round. While the Araca can naturally endure some seasonal flooding typical of the Amazon, it is recommended to ensure perfect drainage and prevent flooding in cooler, marginal climates. Soil fertility is non-essential, as Araca naturally thrives in leached, acidic soils. Functioning as an understory plant, Araca tolerates both part shade and full sun once mature. With a slow growth rate, it reaches a fully mature height of 3-4m under ideal conditions, fruiting well below its maximum height. Due to their growth and fruiting nature, coupled with the potential challenges of providing preferred conditions in marginal climates, Aracas are well-suited for cultivation in containers. Gardeners have reported success unprotected in the Central Coast and Sydney, and even in Melbourne with some protection. As an attractive ornamental, typical of most Eugenia species, the Araca possesses a dense growth habit, flaking reddish bark, and showy white flowers that emerge throughout the year. Under healthy conditions, up to four crops can be produced annually. A rare and peculiar tropical specimen with a flavor that packs a punch, the Araca is an ideal tropical choice for enthusiasts of acidic fruits.
