General Info – Aniseed Myrtle, Ringwood, Aniseed Tree
Aniseed Myrtle leaves have a strong and delightful aniseed scent and flavour, reminiscent of the iconic taste of liquorice and present in spices like Star Anise. They also impart a distinctive Eucalypt flavour, perfect for infusing the essence of the Australian bush. The leaves can be used to make a refreshing herbal tea or to flavour sauces, preserves, glazes, stuffings, biscuits, and bread dough. They can be consumed fresh, dried, or powdered, and essential oil can be extracted from the leaves. Traditionally, Aniseed Myrtle has been used for medicinal purposes, and the leaves are rich in antioxidants and nutrients, including high levels of vitamins C, E, and folate, as well as calcium, magnesium, and zinc. As a member of the Backhousia genus, it is related to Lemon Myrtle, Cinnamon Myrtle, and Curry Myrtle. This tree is an excellent choice for anyone who loves aniseed flavour and seeks a perennial native tree. Aniseed Myrtle is native to the subtropical rainforests of Northern New South Wales, where it is a rare species found along valley streams and lower slopes. It thrives in well-draining loamy soil and prefers a full sun position, although it can also tolerate sandy soils and partial shade. Once established, Aniseed Myrtle is a hardy tree that can withstand frost and drought. With their upright form and dense foliage, Aniseed Myrtle is ideal for year-round ornamental displays. They produce fluffy, creamy-white flowers with a sweet fragrance that bloom in a stunning summer display, making them excellent for attracting pollinators such as bees and butterflies. The new growth is soft and ranges from pink to maroon, maturing into glossy green leaves with wavy margins. Although Aniseed Myrtle can grow into a large, imposing tree, reaching heights of up to 45 metres, they often mature to a smaller size in cultivation and can be pruned to a more manageable height.
